SSR is an accredited rail operator, operating rail freight in NSW and Victoria. The rail freight services and operations are supported by a 24/7 LiveRun Team.

In meeting existing customer requirements, train crewing depots are currently located in Sydney, Lithgow, and Newcastle.

With a motivated, experienced and trained workforce, SSR has the ability to provide crews for any rail solution across Australia beyond the above locations. The established Safety Management System, and associated train operating systems are capable of handling new rail freight services and rapid growth.

Locomotive GPS tracking and fuel monitoring allow remote management of assets in the field. Company issued technology to each crew member enables real time geo-tracking of train services, and the reporting of on-time-running, and the cause of any delays. Customers are given access to the applicable systems and reports.

Rail Services

Coal Haulage

SSR entered the coal haulage market in 2010, and has proven its capabilities to deliver an unparalleled level of customer service and flexibility. Current operations centre on rail freight services from four mines located within a 250 km radius of Sydney, and transporting this resource to the four primary export terminals in New South Wales (Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group Kooragang Terminal, Port Waratah Coal Services Kooragang Coal Terminal, Carrington Coal Terminal, and the Port Kembla Coal Terminal). In addition SSR also supplies coal to Eraring power station through the station’s state of the art quick drop wagon discharge system. SSR has the ability to haul any coal products from any location throughout Australia.

SSR is also a proud member of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator (HVCCC).

SSR has the ability and experience with heavy haulage of commodities to provide a range of services from full service delivery, including provision of equipment, crewing and management, to operating equipment owned by the commodities producer.

Grain Haulage

SSR has the experience and understands the requirements for a competitively priced bulk grain haulage rail solution for its customers across Australia.

SSR is very familiar with both the domestic and export heavy haulage tasks, and the management team possesses the necessary experience with grain haulage rail freight services.

Our team of dedicated employees have extensive experience in designing heavy haulage solutions to meet the unique needs of our diverse clientele, including the transport of containerised grain via intermodal freight.

Infrastructure Work Trains

SSR performs a large proportion of the infrastructure train haulage in New South Wales, and the interstate rail corridor in Victoria.

Our heavy haulage rail freight services offer customers expertise and quality assurance that each job is done properly while adhering to high standards for safety.

Infrastructure rail services are typically operated in a ‘Hook and Pull’ arrangement, where most of the rollingstock is owned by the network manager, and SSR provides the locomotives, train crew, and all necessary train operating functions and management expertise.

Experienced train crews are used to perform what can be quite specialised and exacting tasks in worksites.

> Our Capabilities

Apart from the ballast, sleeper, rail delivery trains and reclamation of ‘fouled ballast’ spoil trains, SSR also undertakes the heavy haulage of specialised infrastructure maintenance equipment worth many millions of dollars. This type of equipment includes ballast cleaners, track laying machines, tampers and specialised wagons loaded with track panels and associated machinery.

SSR operates infrastructure trains for network owners and managers such as Sydney Trains / RailCorp, Australian Rail Track Corporation, and John Holland Rail. SSR has been involved in many major projects with these network managers and continues to provide heavy haulage services to assist with the upkeep of the networks across Australia.

Intermodal Freight

SSR has extensive experience in intermodal freight haulage, providing this service for customers with unique shipping and export requirements. Whether we are providing time and/or environmentally sensitive services, SSR handles every intermodal freight job with precision.

Intermodal freight gives customers the option of finding the most cost-effective and efficient means of moving their materials and the team at SSR has the industry knowledge and experience to find the perfect solution to your needs.

> Proven Expertise

SSR operates an intermodal freight service for exports though Port Botany.

SSR maintains Interface Agreements with both Patrick and DP World at Port Botany, and has the ability to source container solutions for customers from MCS at Cooks River, Sydney.

SSR train crews are issued with Maritime Security Identification Cards (MSIC) for port access, and are trained in dangerous goods handling.

Testing & Commissioning

Rail Operators and manufactures understand that new and rebuilt locomotives and wagons require on-track dynamic testing for accreditation and compliance purposes. Given the unique aspects of each item of rollingstock subject to testing, requirements vary for each project. SSR operational staff and the train crew understand the need to work closely with test engineers to ensure the equipment is correctly tested and the required outcomes are achieved.

SSR also takes care of the network owners’ requirements in regards to the operation of new assets on the network. This ensures testing can be completed by our customers in a safe and efficient manner.

> Competent and Reliable Service

SSR provides train crew, recovery locomotives and train management for the testing of new locomotives built by the two largest ,locomotive manufacturers in Australia – United Group Limited and Downer Rail. SSR crews are competent in the operation of the newest United Group Limited (UGL) built C44aci model locomotives as well as the Downer Rail built GT46ace model locomotives.

Haulage trials have been conducted on new locomotives for Consolidated Rail Leasing, Centennial Coal, and CFCL Australia.

Wagon testing often requires precise driving with speeds over 127km/h. SSR has conducted wagon testing for Bradken Rail and Consolidated Rail Leasing.

Serving rail freight companies and wagon and locomotive manufacturers across Australia, SSR can provide testing, commissioning, locomotive maintenance and rollingstock maintenance to ensure you meet your standards for safety and performance.

Rollingstock Transfers

SSR conducts transfers for various rollingstock owners and rail freight companies, including heavy haulage transfers. Transfer may simply be the relocation of assets, or may include the transfer of rollingstock for maintenance in a workshop facility. Whatever your requirements, our rail freight services can provide comprehensive project management and assistance to complete the job quickly and efficiently.

The team at SSR has an attention to detail, ensuring that the customer’s specifications are followed exactly in regards to the haulage requirement or shunting and positioning plan.

> Providing Comprehensive Service

Unlike typical rail freight companies, specialist rollingstock owner, finance and lessor companies may not necessarily have the regulatory approval in the form of a rail operator accreditation. SSR can provide the service in these cases and our rollingstock maintenance staff can inspect and provide Ready To Go (RTG) certification for the rollingstock prior to departure.
